on the needles

Gorgeous double cable, short sleeved sweater with an offset button collar from 1940.
Another from the fabulous collection at Trove, it can be found here.

I am knitting this in stylercraft acrylic 4ply in a deep mustard colour. Because it is 4ply, it makes a heavy, stiff fabric if I use the recommended 2.25 and 3.25mm needles. That is one of the reasons I have upsized to 2.75 and 3.5mm needles

I do love knitting cables, but I have to say that this is a fiddly little sucker. It is a 12 stitch cable section, with the cable needle going back and forward before knitting the stitches from it i.e.

'slip the next 2 sts on to spare needle and let fall to back of work;  k the next 2 sts and bring spare needle forward to front of work. K next 2 sts, then k the 2 sts from the spare needle. Rep twist by knitting the next six sts  in exactly the same manner as previous six'

.

Well worth the effort I think though ...
