Alfie
or
'What's a shawl about... Alfieee'
I have some gorgeous variegated yarn which I recently rediscovered and which I decided needed to become a shawl for winter.
Not a Victorian granny, over the shoulders type shawl with the point hanging down the back.
Noo . more a wild west bandito with the point at the front and a double wrap.
This is the sorceress scarf from 'Life is Cozy'. Unfortunately, gorgeous as this one is, a pattern that knits from corner to corner will inevitably give vertical stripes which isn't what I am looking for.
I like the construction of this one from Purl Soho but not the horizontalness (made up word!) of the stripes that the variegated yarn gives.
The
colourshift shawl from Cascade yarns, I like very much because of the double stitch in the centre (not so much the lacy inserts). It also gives some idea of how the variegated yarn will look, which is more of the v-shape I want.
The
simpliciknit shawl from hookedhazel has a really nice, wide garter stitch edging and an applied top edging to match. I'm not keen on the horizontal ridge patterns which, I think are a bit unnecessary for my yarn. Also, I want something a bit mindless to work on. Something that knits itself until a stitch marker nudges me back to reality. So I am combining the stocking stitch pattern from simpliciknit with the double stitch centre from colourshift. And it goes something like this ...
Cast on 10 stitches
Set up row: (WS): K3, pm, p1, pm, p2, pm, p1, pm, k3.
Row 1: (RS) K3, sm, YO, k to m, YO, sm, k2, sm, YO, k to m, YO, sm, k3
Row 2: K3, p to last 3 sts, k3
I can repeat these 2 rows until it's as big as I want, or I run out of yarn. Hookedhazel continues until she reaches 273 stitches and 133 rows, but I am not keen on row counting or big numbers in general, so I will probably just eyeball it. If I am reeally lucky and it is big enough and I have enough yarn left, I will be able to tackle this bad boy
Applied Garter Edge
CO 4.
Row 1: K3, k2tog through the back loop, turn
Row 2: Sl1wyif, k 3, turn.
Repeat rows 1 – 2 across the end of shawl.
BO.
